Kamito is a Filipino word used to refer to a tree known for its delicious fruits known as kaimito fruit. Kaimito in English is called star apple, purple star apple, golden leaf tree, and milk fruit. Other kaimito names include cainito, caimito, abiaba, pomme de lait, and estrella. Kaimito scientific name is Chrysophyllum cainito.

Kaimito is a tropical fruit tree. The tree is important source of local fruit sold in the market due to its high demand. The taste of the fruit is pleasing. It is star shaped when sliced in the middle which made its name star apple. Star apple fruits are sold per kilo and commonly found as violet, purple and green fruit in terms of color. The tree requires big area as it is characterized with a spreading crown, and a height that goes up to 15 meters. Branches are many and slender, the young tips are copper-colored underneath the leave. It is covered with appressed hairs. Leaves are leathery, oblong and has pointed ends. The length of the leaves is around 7.5 to 13 centimeters long, pointed at the tip, blunt or rounded at the base and covered underneath with silky, golden-brown, soft hairs. The kaimito tree propagate via seeds. Seeds come from the fruit of a mature kaimito plant that is edible when ripe. Kaimito flowers are small purplish to purplish white, and clustered in the axils of leaves, with 5 sepals, and a tubular corolla with 5 lobes. Fruit is globular in shape and large with 6 - 10 cm in diameter. It is shiny and smooth with a translucent whitish or purplish, soft pulp surrounding flattened seeds about 1 to 1.5 centimeters long. The kaimito fruit flesh has small amount of latex and milky juice that is sweet and pleasant tasting.Kaimito Images
